Unakka Meen Chakkakuru Manga Curry
Ingredients (Serves 5 – 6)
1. Unakka meen (medium or small sized unakka ayala) – 6 (Around 100 gm)
2. Chakka kuru / jackfruit seeds – 10 – 15, quartered
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Chilly powder – 3/4 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Green chilies – 3, slit
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
3. Drumstick – 1, cut into 2 inch pieces
Raw mango – 1/3 cup or to taste, peeled and cut into small pieces
4. Grated coconut – 1.5 cups
Shallots – 3 – 4
5. Salt – To taste
6. Water – As required
7. Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
Curry leaves – A few
Method
1. Soak the unakka meen in water for about 15 – 20 minutes. Cut into small pieces.
2. Grind the grated coconut with 3 – 4 shallots and little water to a fine paste.
3. In a clay pot or meen chatti, add ingredients numbered 2. Pour about 1 – 1.5 cup of water, mix well and cook covered until chakka kuru is 3/4th done, over medium heat. Add dried fish, drumstick and mango pieces. Add more water, if required. Cook until done. Bring down the heat and add ground coconut paste. Mix well and taste check for salt. You can add a little hot water if the gravy is very thick. Taste-check for salt. Cook for a few minutes over low medium heat. Add a tbsp of coconut oil and a few curry leaves. Keep aside for 15 mts. Mix well and serve with hot rice.
